Jack got all dressed up for a big day yesterday, his Baptism! Grandma Shirley made his cute little romper outfit, hat, booties, and even a burp cloth! Thank you so much grandma! It turned out amazing! (WAY better than anything I could have bought.) He was baptised at Maple Grove Lutheran Church by Pastor Chiles. Most of the family were able to come and celebrate with us at the church and afterwards for lunch at my parents' house.
His Godparents (or sponsors) are his Uncle Andy...
*We dressed Jack in white to symbolize being clothed in a new robe - Jesus Christ, covered by his forgiveness and righteousness.
*The Heart of the ritual is "The Great Bath" the water is a cleansing bath, the washing away of sin. This is where Jack was incorporated into the Christ and the church - Child of God!
*Next comes the "laying of the hands" with prayers for the pouring out of the Holy Spirit. - an ancient sign of the passing on of a blessing.
*Then, the sign of the cross with oil on the forehead - a picture of being sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked with the cross of Christ. The oil reminds us of the ancient Hebrew practice of anointing kings and priests.
*And, the presentation of a baptism candle - a sign of receiving the light of Christ. The candle reminds us of the baptismal passage from darkness to light.
It is neat to read about the symbolism of each part of the ceremony. I needed to brush up on my baptism knowledge since Anna will get her turn soon. Also, your grandma is so talented! His outfit was perfect.
